Drug Addiction


Addiction can be defined as compulsive drug use, psychological dependence, and continuing use despite harm.  Many drug addicts experience an abnormally tolerance to and dependence on something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming  and an abnormally strong craving to use the drugs.  People who are addicts often are unable to see their drug problem and think that everyone else is the problem even though there addiction causes a lot of destruction in their and their loved ones lives.

Addicts cannot stop using the drugs on their own: they need help.  Often, a drug addict's dopamine levels in the brain are altered/increased.  An increase in dopamine levels by drugs causes an addict to feel elated and inhibits the natural survival instinct that we all possess.  The increased "high" completely alters an addicts perception of reality.  That's why many an addict experiences depression and withdrawal when they are unable to use drugs.

Some of the signs that someone is an addict are fatigue, obesessive behavior, out-of-control behavior and hyperactivity.  If you suspect that one of your family members has become a drug addict, immediately seek professional help.  And remember, addictions can come in many forms...
