Alcoholism
Relationship
Are you in a relationship with someone who suffers
from alcoholism? Often, spouses and family of people who are in
relationships where alcoholism is prevalent become codependent. This
means that the person in a alcoholic relationship develops behavior and
other problems by trying to cope with the alcoholic and the alcoholism
behavior.
Time and time again, family members of alcoholics will be ashamed of the
alcoholic’s behavior,
try to safeguard the family unit and try to hide the alcoholism problems
from other family members and friends. As a result, they may experience
chronic unhappiness, a feeling that needs are not being met, problems
with intamcy, distrust and physical illness. Yet, they still
attempt to preserve the relationship with the alcoholic
If your loved one is suffering from alcoholism, you may need to go to
counseling or attend a support group such as Alanon. However, counseling
will not resolve the root of the problem which is the alcoholic in your
life and your relationship with him. The only permanent solutions are:
1. You can leave the relationship
2. You can get your loved one suffering from alcoholism into treatment so that you may be able to
have a good relationship again.
If your loved one is able to recover from the
alcoholism, you may be able to have a normal relationship again.
