Alcoholism Rehabilitation

There are many things an alcoholic can do in order to assure that treatment will work.   Since alcoholism is a disease, it can be dealt with successfully just as modern medicine has  dealt with diseases such as diabetes.  Physicians have drugs such as  naltrexone and disulfiram to aid in the initiation of a behavior change on the part of the alcoholic.

The following are some key elements which will help  ensure that any alcoholism rehabilitation results in a positive outcome:

  • Voluntary check-in at a rehabilitation center through the intervention process

  • Professional assessment of the alcoholic

  • Analysis of social behavior

  • Good relationship with professional therapist

  • Prescription medication such as naltrexone

  • Long-term care, at least 90 days

  • Support from family and friends

  • Regular Alcoholics Anonymous participation

It is important to note that while participation in support groups is essential, it is not the only component necessary for  successful alcohol rehabilitation
